Composite Laminate

Composite Lamina is a treatment method applied to the front surface of the teeth in order to change the shape of the anterior teeth, change their color, enlarge the tooth, and treat any defect without cutting the teeth. It is one of the methods used to provide dental aesthetics. It takes its name from the fact that it is made by applying composite material to the surface of the teeth. It has names such as composite veneer, composite laminate, composite filling, composite tooth and lamina tooth. Composite lamina is the preferred name that is used more.

Composite bonding is the process of attaching composite material to the teeth of people who have problems in dental aesthetics in order to get rid of this situation.

In Which Situations Can Composite Lamina Be Applied?

This application, which is used to repair tooth damage and to have an aesthetic smile, is very common today. Let’s list why it is preferred item by item.

  1. In the elimination of deformities in the teeth,
  2. If the tooth structures are broken or worn,
  3. In case of large fillings, fractures, cracks and caries in the front teeth,
  4. In filling the cavities formed as a result of decayed tooth treatments,
  5. In extending the length of the teeth,
  6. In closing the gaps if there is a split tooth (diestema),
  7. In eliminating the aesthetically desired smile deficiency,
  8. Correction of crooked teeth that do not require orthodontic treatment,
  9. If there are stains on the teeth,
  10. If there are stubborn stains despite teeth whitening,
  11. To give a new aesthetic appearance to the teeth when the aesthetics of the teeth are not liked,
  12. In abrasions and hard discoloration at the teeth and gingival borders,
  13. It is used in the correction of discolored teeth due to fluorosis and deformed teeth due to antibiotics.
Advantages of Composite Lamina Application
  • Composite fillings look much more aesthetic than amalgam fillings.
  • One treatment takes place.
  • It is very fast and economical.
  • Additions and repairs can be made.
  • It is difficult to distinguish from natural tooth color.
  • The reaction of composite laminates to discoloration is similar to that of natural teeth.
  • Except for the decayed anterior teeth, treatment is possible without anesthesia.
  • It is an application that is both a single session and has a very high success rate in small complications.
  • Re-polishing can be done during dental check-ups and dental cleanings.
  • It provides an easy solution, as it allows for repair and can be corrected in a single session.
  • As the Disadvantage of Composite Lamina Application  , we can say that its durability is lower than porcelain laminates.
Lamina Tooth Types

Direct Composite Veneer:  It is a single-session veneer made of composite resin material that can be applied directly to the teeth.

Indirect Composite Lamina:  It is the application process that differs from direct application in terms of application process. Unlike direct application, it is more resistant to abrasion and breakage. The cost is higher.

Prefabricated Composite Veneer:  They are produced in standard lengths and forms.

Leaf Porcelain: It  is the most durable, the most aesthetic and the most expensive among laminate veneers. It is produced from zirconium and porcelain.

How is Composite Lamina Applied?

First of all, it is necessary to examine the patient by a specialist dentist. The procedures begin when the dentist considers the treatment appropriate by applying composite lamina. The area to be treated must be cleaned of blood and saliva. Because composite is a sensitive material against oral liquids. The process begins by applying some acid to the surface of the tooth so that the acid creates a rough texture on the outer surface of the tooth and the coating adheres more easily. When the tooth is cleaned from acid, an adhesive called bond is applied to increase the adhesion rate of the composite. It is ensured that the adhesive is frozen with the help of led lights. Then the composite parts are placed. The hardening of the composite and its integration with the tooth occurs with the help of blue light. The process ends with the dentist’s minor corrections and tooth polishing on the composite filling, which is combined with the tooth by light on a chemical basis.

Differences Between Leaf Porcelain and Composite Lamina

Composite lamina is a resin-based material applied to the outer surface of the teeth. Leaf porcelain is thin ceramic shells that are adhered to the outer surface of the anterior teeth.

When evaluated in terms of time, the  application time of the composite laminate to the teeth is shorter than the leaf porcelain.

In terms of  durability, although composite laminates are very durable, they are not as durable as leaf porcelain laminates. While composite laminates can last for 4-8 years, porcelain laminates last for 10-15 years. Composite laminates can be repaired later if deemed necessary. Leaf porcelain laminates cannot be repaired.

Aesthetically,  leaf porcelains are very similar to the natural tooth structure. This is because it has a semi-transparent property. While leaf porcelain does not stain, composite laminates can stain just like natural teeth .

In terms of cost,  laminate porcelain applications are more expensive than composite laminates. The reason is that it requires laboratory, time and expertise.
