Why Is The Tooth Extracted?

There may be different reasons for tooth extraction. However, first of all, we should point out that it is most ideal to use our adult teeth, which replace the milk teeth we had in our childhood, for life. Well, why do our teeth need to be pulled in some cases, let’s look at these reasons together.

  1. Damage to the teeth beyond repair (bruises, traumas, etc.)
  2. Excess teeth that do not fit the jaw completely (Requires orthodontic treatment)
  3. Invisible teeth in our gums, impacted wisdom teeth
  4. Tooth decay reaching the root of the tooth
  5. Infection destroying or damaging the tooth or surrounding bone

What are the conditions that we especially need to notify our dentist before tooth extraction?

What Should I Do After Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is an outpatient treatment. After the tooth extraction is complete, you can go home. The healing period of the extracted tooth place usually lasts for a few days.

So, what can we do during the recovery phase?

  1. Painkillers: We must use our painkillers as prescribed. We should not take painkillers without asking our dentist.
  2. Gauze: We need to bite the gauze that is placed by our dentist in order to reduce bleeding and to cause a clot to form in the tooth socket. We need to keep the gauze in our mouth for 15-20 minutes. Then we have to throw the gauze in the trash.
  3. Ice Bag: We need to apply the ice pack to the area of our extracted tooth for 10 minutes from the outside. After 10 minutes, we can rest a little and apply again. Applying an ice pack is important to prevent swelling in the area.
  4. Mouthwash: Mouthwash should not be applied in the first 24 hours   During this time, we need to avoid rinsing our mouth too vigorously and spitting. We can apply mouthwash 1 day after our tooth extraction.
  5. Solid and Liquid Foods: It will not be appropriate for us to consume solid foods after having our teeth extracted. We can consume foods such as puree, pudding, soup. Once we recover, we can slowly switch to solid foods.
  6. Smoking: In order to speed up the healing process, we should not smoke at this stage.
  7. Keeping Our Head Up: Lying flat can prolong our bleeding time. It will be a more suitable position to support our head with a pillow while lying down.
  8. Tooth Cleaning: We should brush our teeth, tongue and use dental floss away from the tooth extraction area.
I had my tooth pulled and the pain started. Is it normal?

With the end of the effect of anesthesia, pain may be felt, this is normal. For the first 24 hours, there may be some swelling and light bleeding. However, if excessive bleeding or severe pain persists for more than 4 hours after tooth extraction, we should call our dentist and report the situation.

I had a tooth pulled and I have nausea.

In such cases, if complaints of fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, signs of infection, redness, swelling or excessive discharge, cough, shortness of breath or chest pain occur, we should call our dentist again and report the situation.
